Sustainable profitability
Sustainable profitability is defined as: a company that provides a product or/ and a service which is profitable and yet sustainable.
The main pros of being sustainable is that being sustainable creates trust between the corporation and the customer and community. This leads to that the more responsible the company, the more supportive the community and consumers become. According to an article by Forbes (Author: Marguerita Cheng) “8 Characteristics Of Millennials That Support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” millennials compose the largest population who value sustainability. What makes millennials a different and more difficult consumer is that millennials are the most educated and knowledgeable generation in history, according to Forbes. The Pew Research Center has concluded that “63% of millennials value a college education and are preparing to acquire one, 19% already have a degree and 44% are currently studying”.
Example 2: Sustainable Ikea
Ikea, the world’s largest furniture retailer has made it’s mission to become more sustainable in the by the year 2030.
One of Ikeas goals is the be energy independent, meaning that Ikea will create its own energy with wind turbines by 2020. Currently Ikea has a total of 416 wind turbines and 750,000 solar panels with which they covered 73% of their energy consumption last year.
Ikea also has over 500 affordable products which enable more sustainable living, which are water and energy efficient and can be recycled and be used as renewable energy. Ikea is also aiming to have all their resources from sustainable sources. Currently 77% of their wood and 100% of the wool is from sustainable sources.
IKEA also has targets to eliminate single-use plastic from their home-furnishing selection, restaurants and cafes with renewable or recycled materials by 2030. They have already achieved by 2020 to renew their straws, cutlery, cups and plates to be disposable and from 100% renewable energy sources.
IKEA is also striving to change customer behavior in their food options. They have created delicious new products to their restaurants and cafes such as veggie balls and hot dogs, MUNSBIT fruit snacks, nut mixes and oat smoothies, and SJÖRAPPORT vegan caviar. They believe that “food should not only be good for you, it should also be good for the planet”.
